Here's the screenshot I promised earlier:

As you can see, GW2 contains gw.dat, gw.tmp (auto-created, you don't copy this) GWx2_4.1 (the current version), a spurious readme (for GWx2) and Gw itself, aka gw.exe

Interesting note - my original .dat is 3,747,519 KB (3.57 GB), the copy is suffering from .datbloat and is 4,395,025 KB (a hefty 4.19 GB). I really should do something about that...

RE-d/l'd it a few times adn mess around with a few things and think i got somewhere with it, when i run as administrator the menu of path 1 & 2 came up,it put in the following

path 1:
folder icon > Computer >OS(C: ) >Program Files > Guildwars
Current files in it:
gw.tmp
gw.dat
Gw.exe

Folder Icon >Computer >OS(C: ) >Program Files >Guildwars 2
Copied folder from Guildwars Folder and renamed it GuildWars2: these are current files in it:
GW.exe
Gw.dat
Gwx2_4.1

Also when ever i run as admin on GWx2 it jsut starts up one, Doesn't even ask for paths, its just like clicking a shortcut.
How do iget the path menu back?

Also how do i delete them?
it says i need admin (which i do) when i say continue with deletion a pop-up appears saying "try again" or "cancel", it says i dont have admin powers to do so when i've been running programs as admin for a while etc.
sorry about all the trouble><

I think GWx2 just doesn't like you, Talach

The path menu only comes up the first time you run the app - you would only get that back by deleting the folder and starting (yet) again.

Another thing I should look at when I get home - which bits I'm running as administrator. I know I run GW as admin, and probably GWx2, I'm just wondering whether the copy of gw.exe needs to be set to admin too.

I wish someone would pick up GWx2 and start working on it again - there's so man improvements that could be made. It's such a good program once it's up and running.

Right. Here's what I did, beginning from the very start.

  • Create a new folder, let's say GW2
  • Download gwx2, which is a .zip.
  • Extract the files from the .zip - double click, extract all, set path to GW2
  • Open your original Guild Wars folder
  • Right-click and drag gw.exe and gw.dat to the GW2 folder
  • When releasing right mouse button, select "create copy here"
That's the very basic, totally foolproof method, which you probably did anyway. Sory if it's obvious, but it might be useful to anyone else having problems.

Once you've done all that, double-clicking GWx2.exe should start everything going. Should do...

It may have failed because gw.dat/exe/whutever was "still in use". Happens sometimes, even when something's not visibly in use.

Did it and got the path things back up, thing is tho it stil doesnt work, i followed the intructions to the word.
it only opens 1 window

For some reason vista decided that it'd make me 2 gw folders one in program files/guildwars and another in documents/guildwars the documents one holds the builds and photos while the program files holds the .exe and .dat would that make a differance?

Also i tried it but i swapped the pathways around as in gw1 was going to pathway 2 and gw2 was going to pathway1 still got the same result.

the location is:
Folder Icon >Computer >OS(C: ) >Program Files >Guildwars 2

and
Folder Icon >Computer >OS(C: ) >Program Files >Guildwars
so they should be i nthe right place.

Bloody hell, this is starting to get really irritating - though more for you than for me, I bet!

First thing - don't worry about the GW folder in Doucuments - that's just how Vista works with docs and images.

Next, probably not a fix but worth a shot, try renaming Guildwars 2 to something without a space, like Guildwars2. Used to make a difference in the old 8.3 days, but shouldn't now. Won't cost anything to try though.

Finally, if you like, PM me with your email address and I will send you a copy of my gwx2_4.1 - maybe you keep getting duds from wherever you download. Again, it's worth a shot.

If at first you don't succeed...

Apart from that, it's pretty straightforward.

p.s: sorry, somehow i missed that point where others have pointed out

The OP solved the problem ages ago It's Talach that I'm trying to sort out now, and he's replaced the .exe several times.

As an update, Talach installed gwx2 on an older system running XP and it worked perfectly, so it's an issue with his Vista system.

Gwx2 is odd, it's like for some people it just works, and for some people it just doesn't

As an aside, I checked my installation again and discovered that none of the executables are running in admin mode - that's both gw.exes and the gwx2_4.1.exe. No "Run as administrator" for any of them.

ok heres how I did it.

You have your original Guild Wars folder in its place.
select and copy it to your desktop, then rename it to Guild Wars2 no space.
Put that newly renamed folder back in where the original is. Yes copy everything wont hurt anything to do it.
Then Use the GWx2 installer. (doesnt matter where it is placed) Follow instructions.

It will create a shortcut on your desktop.

If you are having problems try unistalling the GWx2 program and rerunning it.

If that still fails theres still one more trick. Go into each folder and click each of the 2 GW.exe files one at a time and put in windowed mode. Then rerun the GWx2 installation.

When you say "put it back in where the original is" - do you mean having a Guild Wars2 folder within the Guild Wars folder?

That crossed my mind too, but I worried that if the gw.exe client is run from a location other than where the registry thinks it is, the client will ASK where its installation files are (if you catch my drift). I'm sure I remember it doing that when I installed a new OS and just ran gw.exe from its existing location.

Having said that, Mani - previous topics would seem to prove you have far more experience with gwx2 than me

I meant in the same folder that GW is also in ie C:\Program Files

sometimes its just one of those weird things that works. Its like getting the comptuer to know where both files are located at. yes it registers them the same in the registry. DOnt have to worry it shouldnt ask where the installation files are,

i have tried make this run for a time but seems it is not working on my pc so I decided to quit. Here's my scenario:

I have 2 pc and I have 2 accounts.

First time i did it is to make a copy of my GW from my new pc to my old pc (reformatted, running windows XP sp2 with all the updates from Microsoft).

So, i am playing with 2 pc but i got tired with this because I kept on switching from my new pc to my old pc (half meter away actually but i have to work on 2 keyboards and 2 mouse). So I decided to search of an alternative and found this GWx2 thing. So, I downloaded it...unzipped and run.

It asked for path 1 and then asked for path 2. Then the program closed so I run again. When I re-run, it only run 1 window (one game)...I tried to run the GWx2 on my original installation (c:\program files...) and on my second copy (d:\gw) and both run only 1 window.

I still have the GWx2 on my second copy (d:\gw) but i don't use it (actually haven't used it) because it doesn't work for me.

I though Anet installed a protection on GW by not allowing more than 1 instance running on 1 pc.

Anet has said they are fine with it just as long as you know if it screws up they are not responisble for it.

try minimizing ur GW game to window size. Sometimes what happens is it only itializes on one for the graphics and it wont allow the second one to run. That is the most common error when it doesnt run the second copy of GW. Also it seems that the link of GWx2 may not be a working copy or people are running into errors while D/Ling it.
